Early Freedom Fighters in South Africa: The 1825 Koue Bokkeveld Slave Revolt

Colonial South Africa was a slave society; chattel slavery was legal for 180 years. In that time, there were two organized slave revolts: 1808 and 1825. The 1825 revolt took place in a remote mountain valley, when enslaved and indentured laborers joined forces to violently change the status quo. Their bid to "make themselves free" is the stuff of local legends. Using extensive archival sources and oral histories, speaker Laura J. Mitchell seeks to separate fact from fiction, and to understand how people today make sense of a brutal conflict in their shared past.
